Baked Ziti

I make this frequently for large family gatherings.  It makes enough to serve six adults and three kids, easily.  This one has been a big hit with even the extended family and has been requested on several occasions.

1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26 ox) jars spaghetti sauce (I don't use all of this, but this is what the recipe calls for)
6 oz provolone cheese (slices)
1 1/2 cup sour cream
6 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.  Add ziti pasta and cook until al dente (about 8 minutes).  Drain.

In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat.  Add spaghetti sauce and simmer 15 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 350 Deg.  Butter a 9X13 inch baking dish.  Layer as follows:

1/2 of the ziti
provolone cheese
sour cream
1/2 sauce mixture
remaining ziti
mozzarella cheese
remaining sauce mixture
Top with grated parmesan cheese
(although the recipe does not call for it, I add another layer of mozzarella cheese prior to topping with parmesan cheese - just because my family likes cheese!)

Bake for 30 minutes or until the cheeses are melted.

This is great as a "leftover" as well!

  1. I have made this twice now and it is soooo delish! I use my leftover sauce from spaghetti 2 nights before and then make this as a full meal. I don't waste any food all week! I am sharing this with many, many!
